A Scrabble Set priced at £20,000 (or $31,830) will be used at the Prague Mind Sports event, which is scheduled to be held in Prague, later on in 2012. This expensive scrabble board has been created by Mind Sports International, to bring the game of scrabble alive and broadcast it to a global audience.

Mind Sports International's Electronic Scrabble Board

The £20,000 scrabble set has a board that possesses RFID technology, and can broadcast scrabble tournaments online, in real-time. The RFID technology in the scrabble board is able to read the letter tiles on the board in micro-seconds, and transmit this information to a specially-created scrabble tournament software. This software will display the location of each alphabet tile, together with HD video footage of the scrabble player, to online viewers across the world.

Scrabble Board for the Prague Mindsports Event

The world’s most expensive Scrabble Set also has integrated RGB controlled LED lighting and a smooth carbon fibre finish. It contains nine RFID circuit boards, which house a total of 225 RFID antennas. These antennas and circuit boards read each individual scrabble tile. In turn, each scrabble alphabet tile has a unique RFID tag with an embedded RFID circuit board, which can be identified by the RFID antennas in the main scrabble board.

Do you play Scrabble, and will you be watching the Prague Mind Sports event online? What do you think of this expensive scrabble board set?

Sapphire Hard Disk – World’s Most Expensive Hard Disk

The world’s most expensive hard disk is a sapphire disk drive, whose prototype is priced at US $30,000. The data inside this sapphire hard disk is engraved in platinum, and the disk itself is expected to last for around one million years. The idea of developing this sapphire hard disk came about when builders of nuclear waste repositories, recognised that it was necessary to preserve data about what substances were buried in which locations. This was required not for a few decades or centuries, but for tens of thousands of years.

Most of the countries with nuclear power stations are in agreement that long-lived nuclear waste should be stored about 500 meters deep within the earth. However, nuclear scientists have always been deeply concerned that archaeologists in the distant future, who have a penchant for excavating various sites, might chance upon a nuclear waste dumping site, and get sick or injured. According to various scientists, the way humans think in the future might be quite different from how we think today, and the way things are done may also be a lot different.

Hence, in 2010, a nuclear waste management agency called ANDRA (based in France) embarked on a project to attend to the above nuclear waste management issue. One of the results of this project was the sapphire disk with platinum data, which is expected to last a good one million years.

Features of the Sapphire Hard Disk

This sapphire hard disk is made from two thin disks of industrial sapphire, both measuring about 20 cm across. Each single sapphire disk has the capacity to store around 40,000 miniaturised pages of information. After the selected information is stored in the sapphire hard disks, the two disks will be molecularly fused together. If a future archaeologist would like to view the data on the disk, they would simply have to use a regular microscope.

The durability of this sapphire hard disk has been tested by immersing it in acid. The success of this acid test also shows that the disk will be able to withstand centuries of aging, and ANDRA hopes it will display a lifetime of 10 million years.

The sapphire hard disk would be unaffordable for most geeks, because of its expected high price. In fact, the prototype itself is priced at US $30,000. However, if you are a millionaire looking to store personal information for posterity, then you will certainly be able to afford it.

World's Most Expensive Billboard

Set up by Skydive Dubai (a skydiving firm) and Go Fast beverages, the world’s most expensive signboard costs a whopping US $1.3 billion. It features an advertisement for the Denver-based Go Fast Sports and Beverage Company’s ‘Go Fast’ drink, and includes a man flying about the billboard using a jet pack.

Dubai is one of the most luxurious cities in the world, and often adds something new to boost its prestige, and attract visitors (both for business and tourism purposes). Some innovations that Dubai is proud of are:
  • The world’s tallest building: the Burj Khalifa
  • The world’s highest fine-dining restaurant: Atmosphere at the Burj Khalifa
  • The world’s tallest hotel: the JW Marriot Marquis Hotel
With the world’s most expensive signboard (billboard), Dubai adds another feather in its cap. This billboard is priced at $1.3 billion for a month, and is placed at a crowded location in downtown Dubai, near the Burj Khalifa building. Most of this amount goes towards paying for the person with the jet pack, who flies about it for about 30 seconds before landing atop the signboard. The huge figure of $1.3 billion has been arrived at by multiplying the $500-a-second cost of using the special jet pack, by the number of minutes used in a day, into 30 days.

Skydive Dubai is a company backed by Emaar Properties, the well-known real estate company. It offers  skydiving tours in the Dubai area, enabling skydivers to get amazing views of the towering Dubai skyline. The brand Go Fast promotes itself as a drink for people who love extreme sports. With the world’s most expensive signboard to its name, Dubai has once again proved that is a world leader in innovative technology for the rich and famous.

Aquos - World’s Largest LED HDTV At 90 Inches

Japanese consumer electronics company Sharp has beaten its 2011 record of the world’s largest LED HDTV by announcing the commercial launch of its new 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV. Last year, Sharp had introduced the 80-inch Aquos LC-80LE632U, as the world’s largest LED HDTV.

This announcement was made at a glittering event held in New York City, where it was also stated that the new 1080p Sharp Aquos LC-90LE745U uses less than 150 watts of power, and thus costs a customer only about $28 per year to operate. According to market analysts, the strategy of annually expanding both the size and the price of their HDTVs has helped Sharp expand its reach, considerably.

Features of Sharp’s 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV

Priced at $10,999, Sharp’s 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV is around four feet tall and more than six feet wide. Its picture quality is as great as its size, with the LED HDTV displaying crystal clear images at HD 1080p resolution. As the TV is very light and slim (weighing only 141 pounds without a stand), it is expected to be very easy for people to hang on the wall.

The 5-inch deep Aquos LED LCD HDTV includes Sharp’s proprietary SmartCentral, and offers users direct access to the most popular video-on-demand websites like YouTube, Netflix, CinemaNow and Hulu Plus. In addition, Sharp’s 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV also allows web browsing and Skype communications, with its built-in Wi-Fi facility.

Moreover, the world’s largest LED HDTV is a fully active 3D TV, and comes with two 3D glasses to enable customers to watch their favourite 3D movies. It also has AquoMotion 240, which prevents pictures from blurring, especially during fast-paced action movies or live sports events.

Also, like other Wi-Fi enabled television sets manufactured by Sharp, the 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV TV features Aquos Advantage LIVESM, a free service that allows customers to connect with a trained customer support executive, over the internet.

Sharp’s 90 inch Aquos LED LCD HDTV is currently only available at high-end electronic stores, for the fantastic price of $10,999.
