World’s Oldest Rum: Jamaica Rum From Appleton Estate

Appleton Estate has proudly launched the ‘world’s oldest barrel-aged rum’ to celebrate 50 years of Jamaica’s independence from Britain. Jamaica in the West Indies was a British colony for 307 years, until the British flag was finally lowered in August 1962.

The oldest barrel-aged rum in the world is named the ‘Appleton Estate 50 Year Old Jamaica Independence Reserve’ rum, and is priced at $4,520 per bottle. This limited edition golden rum comes in a special hand-crafted crystal decanter bottle, etched with designs that represent some of the national symbols of Jamaica. Only 800 limited-edition bottles of this aged rum will be available for sale.

The Appleton Estate 50 Year Old Jamaica Independence Reserve’ rum has been described by rum connoisseurs to be a hand-blended and exceptionally smooth, deep mahogany sipping rum. The aged rum has powerful notes of cinnamon, maple, toasted oak, vanilla and almond, together with a prominent hint of orange peel. This orange peel hint is the main distinguishing feature, which sets apart Jamaican rum made by Appleton Estate from other brands of Jamaican rum.

This special limited-edition bottle of Jamaican rum has been created from a blend of rums, and was aged in American oak barrels for almost fifty years. This rum blending and aging was supervised by Master Blenders Owen Tulloch, and his protégé Joy Spence. This rum blending was planned 50 years ago, with the vision to launch a 50-year-old aged-rum when the golden jubilee of Jamaica’s independence was celebrated in 2012.
